Linne's Annual Cicada (Neotibicen linnei) (Smith and Grossbeck, 1907) |
Synonyms: Tibicen linnei, Linne's Cicada, Dogday Cicada |
Neotibicen linnei is common in deciduous forests of North America east of the Mississippi River, from Lake Erie to Florida. In Ontario this species was confirmed on the Niagara Peninsula and at Long Point. N. linnei varies morphologically across its range, and is often confused with N. canicularis; both are known commonly as “dogday cicadas”. These species usually sing on the hottest days of late summer, which were often referred to as “dog days” in North America.
